The data
Industrial sectors such as manufacturing, chemicals and construction report the most fatalities in India. In 2021 alone an average of seven accidents were reported every month across Indian manufacturing industries, with more than 162 workers killed.
Reported figures almost certainly understate the true picture, since near-misses and non-fatal injuries in the informal sector rarely enter any register at all.
Where the injuries concentrate
Three patterns recur across incident reports: unguarded machinery, working at height without an arrested fall system, and manual handling of loads beyond safe limits. None of these are exotic engineering problems.
The interventions with the best return are almost always the least glamorous: guarding, housekeeping, and PPE that people are willing to wear.
Practical next steps
- Audit machine guarding on every line, not just the newest one
- Log near-misses as seriously as injuries — they are the cheapest data you will ever collect
- Review PPE fit and comfort, since compliance collapses when kit is uncomfortable
- Refresh toolbox talks on manual handling every quarter, not annually
Culture beats posters
Sites that reduce injury rates sustainably tend to share one trait: supervisors who stop work without needing permission. Every other control depends on that.
