Start by asking why it comes off
When PPE compliance is poor, the reflex is more signage and more enforcement. Almost always the real cause is discoverable by asking the workforce a single question: what makes you take it off?
Six things that work
- Fit range — stock sizes that fit the smallest and largest people on site
- Choice — two approved options beat one mandated option, every time
- Availability — replacement at point of use, not through a store requisition
- Visible leadership — supervisors wearing the same kit, in the same places
- Fast feedback — a route to report discomfort that produces a visible response
- Trial before rollout — never standardise on kit the workforce has not worn
Every workaround is data. Someone found your control harder than the hazard.
Measure the leading indicators
Injury counts are lagging and, on a good site, too rare to steer by. Track PPE issue rates, comfort complaints, near-miss reports and spot-check compliance instead. They move first.
Review on a schedule
Processes change, materials change, people change. A PPE specification written three years ago and never revisited is a document, not a control.
